MTSJ Hospital’s Larry Cornish Guest Speaker for VSABA September Meeting ~By Tammy Beilstein

Valley Springs, CA....The September meeting of the Valley Springs Area Business Association “VSABA” took place at noon on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the United Methodist Church of Valley Springs. The luncheon started off with an introduction of the new Pastor of the United Methodist Church of Valley Springs, Pastor Winston A. Cruz. Pastor Cruz is a graduate of Master of Divinity at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley class of 1996, and prior to that, he practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of California for over 30 years.....

The Pastor and other church members informed the VSABA that the United Methodist Church of Valley Springs is preparing for its 125th Anniversary Celebration which will be held at the church on October 4th, 2009 at 10am.

Elaine Maxwell, also of the United Methodist Church of Valley Springs, spoke to the VSABA of the dire need for more donations of food and money to the church’s food pantry. The increase in the number of people needing to be served at the pantry has risen tremendously and the church would like to provide to all who need assistance. For more information regarding the United Methodist Church of Valley Springs’ events, please call (209) 772-2429.

The main speaker of the September VSABA luncheon was Larry Cornish, vice president of facilities and project development for Mark Twain Saint Joseph’s Hospital. Mr. Cornish spoke of the hospital’s 3 year strategic plan which focuses on growing and developing services for the community, leadership and engagement of the community, and bringing innovation and value to the patients.

As part of the plan, Mark Twain Saint Josephs Hospital is promoting its Nurse Call Center. This is a service that provides free health answers 24 hours a day. Callers will be able to speak to a Resource Nurse, get a Physician Referral, and access the extensive Health Information Library by calling (800) 500-5601.

Another new and exciting piece to the hospital’s community engagement portion of the plan is their "Community Cares" online video series. The videos are viewable on youtube.com and will highlight the wonderful work being done to increase the quality of health care throughout Calaveras County. See the link below to view the first video in the series which features hospital President Feliciano Jiron describing the focus of "Community Cares".

Other highlights of Larry Cornish’s discussion included the hospital’s purchase of new equipment including cardiac monitors, new ventilators and new patient beds designed with the patients’ safety and comfort in mind.

Larry Cornish then addressed the need for a new Family Medical Center in Valley Springs. The hospital is currently in discussions with a local developer about building the new center, possibly on the property next to Jitterz on Highway 26.

Mr. Cornish spoke of the commitment Mark Twain Saint Josephs Hospital made to fund a digital mammography unit at the hospital. This new system provides superior detection of breast cancer in women under the age of 50, and is expected to be operational this year. The total cost of this project, including construction, is $840,000.00, and was funded in full by the Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.

The Valley Springs Area Business Association was formed in 1983 by a group of citizens and merchants from the Burson, Wallace, Valley Springs, and Rancho Calaveras areas. They joined together for the mutual benefit of their communities, and in 1984, the Valley Springs Area Business Association “VSABA” was founded as a non-profit corporation.

Today, the VSABA boasts a large, active membership made up of people from the business, working, and retirement communities united in promoting a better environment and image for our area.

The VSABA meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month and are open to the public. October’s meeting will be held at the Rancho Club house and will feature guest speaker, Calaveras County Supervisor Russ Thomas.
