Explore “Wildlife in Winter” at Calaveras Big Trees Seminar

Big Trees State Park, CA.... Botanist/ecologist Joe Medieros will lead a seminar on “Sierra Nevada Wildlife in the Winter” from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, in Jack Knight Hall at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Join Professor Medieros for a slide-illustrated lecture describing the many strategies that the thousands of native species in the Range of Light utilize to make it through this cold and dark season of winter. Medieros discusses whether or not they remain active, hibernate or leave, and what role global climate change plays in the ecology of the Sierras.....

Medieros was a botany instructor at Modesto Junior College for 15 years and Director of the Great Valley Museum before joining Sierra College where he taught botany, ecology and natural history for 18 years. He has studied alpine ecosystems throughout the Sierra Nevada, as well as in Alaska, the European Alps, the Andes, Australia, New Zealand and the East African volcanic regions.

The seminar is free and open to the public. Admission to the park is $8 per car. Pack a lunch, bring your family and friends and plan on spending the day at Big Trees.

For more information, call Calaveras Big Trees State Park at 795-3840, or visit the Web site at www.bigtrees.org.
