Yosemite Big Meadow Fire Now at 2,600 acres and 30% contained

El Portal, CA...We just spoke with Robert Newsom at the fire information center and got a morning update. Crews made good progress on the fire overnight. It is now 2,600 acres and 30% contained. Higher humidity helped as well. As you can see from the accompanying Turtleback Webcam image smoke output has diminished significantly. This should be welcome news to those of us in surrounding areas where smoke accumulation has been an issue. Enclosed is the...

latest release from the NPS on the fire. It is yesterday's release but Robert mentioned that the resource estimates on the fire are still accurate today.

He also mentioned that if they continue to make progress on the fire the evacuation orders in the affected areas may be lifted in the next 24 hours..

The latest NPS release....

Last update: August 28, 8 am

Background: A prescribed fire set by Yosemite National Park (NPS) fire crews on Wednesday, August 26, has grown beyond the predetermined fire perimeter and full supression efforts are in effect. The fire was originally slated to burn 90 acres; however it burned beyond the fire lines.

Once the fire began burning beyond the perimeter late Wednesday morning, National Park Service (NPS) firefighters began supression efforts. NPS firefighters ordered additional resources including air tankers, helicopters, bulldozers, and additional firefighters.

Current situation: The fire is burning actively on all flanks. Last night the fire experienced strong downslope winds. Today, the highest priority continues to be protecting structures in Foresta. Firefighters are being aided by 6 air tankers and 8 helicopters. The Big Oak Flat Road at Crane Flat south to junction of the El Portal Road is closed to traffic. The Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park (from Crane Flat east to the park boundary) remains open.

Fire status:
Location: 2 miles east of El Portal
Acres burned: 2,200
Start date: August 26, 2009
Percent contained: 10%
Estimated containment date: Unknown
Cause: Prescribed fire
Injuries: 0
Structures destroyed: 0

Resources:
Crews: 15
Engines: 29
Helicopters 8
Air tankers: 6
Dozers: 4
Total personnel assigned: 500

Public meeting: There will be a fire information meeting on Friday night (8/28) in El Portal at 6:30 pm at the El Portal Community Center.

Evacuations: Residents of Foresta and campers in the Crane Flat and Tamarack Flat Campgrounds have been moved. There continues to be no access to these areas.

Road closures: The Big Oak Flat Road at Crane Flat south to the junction of the El Portal Road.

Control difficulties: Steep terrain, access, dry vegetation, high temperatures, and low humidity.

Cooperating agencies: U.S. Forest Service, Mariposa County, Cal Fire, local government.

Fire information: 209/372-0480 or 209/372-0669.
