Arnold Rim Trail work day report from Saturday, August 22nd~by Steve Lauterbach

This past Saturday, twenty one volunteers from our community joined USFS Trail Manager Lonnie Allison in another glorious day of trail building and enjoying the pristine forest. As is our custom, we met at the Forest Service Office in Hathaway Pines at 8:30 am where Lonnie gave us an orientation on trail building safety. We then went into the National Forest near San Antonio Creek and built another section of new trail. Afterwards, we enjoyed snacks along San Antonio Creek. Several of the younger volunteers enjoyed cooling off in the clear creek pools. Everyone had just a wonderful time and we finished up around the usual time, 1 pm....

In particular, the Arnold Rim Trail Association would like to thank two new groups who joined us for the first time.

Coach Davis brought five young members of the Sierra Ridge Academy Rite of Passage program in San Andreas. Le, Tafia, Faulkner, Boleware and Jackson all worked diligently and their contributions were greatly appreciated.

We were also joined by another group of young volunteers representing the Calaveras Wranglers 4-H Club. Leader Chris brought Natasha, Kaitlyn, Elena, Rachelle, Julia, and Nick along with parents Ann, Lori, and Missie, all of whom provided yeomen's service.

What a pleasure it is to work in the forest with younger folks, the future stewards of these lands. We welcome them all back anytime for future trail work days.

We also wish to thank several folks who spent the day obtaining GPS coordinates of the 10.46 mile section of Arnold Rim Trail from Avery Sheep Ranch Road to the Sierra Logging Museum. The Arnold Rim Trail Association has a grant application submitted for California State Proposition 40 funds for interpretive, trail head, and trail signage along this section of trail. The application requires that we submit the GPS coordinates of the trail; and two Calaveras County Park and Recreation Commissioners, our District 3 Commissioner Sid Marsh and District 2 Commissioner Pat McGreevy, joined our District 3 Supervisor Merita Callaway to accomplish this task on Saturday. Thanks to all three and special kudos to Pat who traveled from the north part of the county to help out. He has a special interest in trails in our county and quite a bit of experience in mapping.
