Stanislaus National Forest Law Enforcement News for Week of June 23, 2009

On June 23, 2009, a 67 year old male departed Crabtree Trailhead on the Summit District for a 5 day backpack trip into Emigrant Wilderness. He had no family members or friends who were aware of his trip or his return date. Four or five days later, while hiking back, the man became lost. He apparently walked south into the West Fork of Cherry Creek instead of walking west along the Meadow Creek trail. Over the next 5 days, he tried to find his way, ran out of food, and left his gear somewhere in the Wilderness. He lit 3 or 4 wildfires in isolated patches of timber to attract attention. On July 4th, he .......

encountered some people inner tubing on Cherry Creek just above Cherry Lake. They directed him towards the lake. Some fishermen boated back to the Cherry Lake station to report him and on 7/5 a fire crew from Cherry Lake station picked him up in a boat.

On June 24, 2009, amphibian researchers from PSW arrived at Groundhog Meadow on the Summit District for their first seasonal visit as part of on-going research on the Yosemite Yellow-legged Toad. The Yosemite Toad is a USFS sensitive species that is proposed for ESA listing. The researchers observed fresh motorcycle and ATV tracks that cut right through the middle of the meadow, in an area of shallow standing water that contains juvenile toads. This meadow contains some of the best habitat for this declining species. The person who rode the motorcycle had also cut the barbwire fence that excludes this meadow from cattle grazing. This case is being actively investigated by LEI.

On June 27, 2009, at about 3 PM, a 16 year old girl and her brothers were hiking above Highland Lakes in the Carson Iceberg Wilderness on the Calaveras Ranger District. She was tired and left her brothers to return to their vehicle. Instead of walking north, she walked south. She walked all the way across the Wilderness and ended up at an organization camp on the Clark’s Fork of the Stanislaus River; a distance of about 6 miles. The Camp director drove the girl to Pinecrest at about 6:30 PM, where a LEO was surprised to see the girl after hearing radio traffic about an SAR being conducted in another county.

On June 29, 2009, the Groveland LEO was patrolling Rainbow Pool with a California Fish and Game warden. There is a total ban on alcohol at this popular recreation area. The LEO observed several males with a clear bottle of alcohol. As he contacted them, a young man who was on top of a large knob of bedrock next to the swimming area that the LEO could not safely climb, immediately began yelling at the officer. He ordered the man to come down for questioning and he continued yelling taunts and profanities at the LEO. The LEO took the other male back to his truck for questioning and the male on the rock fled. After some searching, the LEO located the hostile man at the lower end of Rainbow Pool. The young man actively resisted being detained and was escorted back up to the vehicle by the Warden and LEO. The handcuffed subject charged and intimidated the LEO several times. The subject was cited for resisting a federal officer.

On June 29, 2009, the Calaveras LEO responded to a report of dogs harassing campers at Union Reservoir. The LEO directed the owners to keep the dogs on leash and issued a written warning.
