Murphys Community Club Town Hall Meeting to Focus on Effects of Economic Upheaval~by Bob Reagan

How the country’s drastic economic upheaval is affecting Murphys and the rest of Calaveras County will be the topic of the Murphy Community Clubs next Town Hall Meeting to be held Tuesday, May 19, 7 p.m. in the Native Daughters Hall, 268 Main St., Murphys. Robert C. Lawton, the County Administrative Officer, will be on hand to describe how the financial crisis is impacting the county’s ability to provide basic services and what might be expected as the federal stimulus package money attempts to improve conditions. He will address the relationship between the state budget and the county’s future. ...

“There has been so much speculation about what the future holds for our area in terms of changes brought on by the recession that we thought this would be a good topic for a forum,” states JoAnna Reagan, MCC board member and organizer of the meeting. “We appreciate Bob Lawton’s willingness to meet with us and share his concerns and how they may be addressed.”

Also on the meeting agenda is a look into the expanding role of The Resource Connection, formerly known as the Human Resources Council (HRC). Executive Director Cathy Bourland will explain how the new configuration is building on the thirty-year history of the HRC to expand its role in engaging families, empowering communities, and enriching lives.

In The Resource Connection’s newly circulated brochure Bourland explains, “We changed our name … because we want the community to better understand what we do. We clarified our mission statement because we want everyone to understand our philosophy and purpose.”

“Our county has always benefitted from the many excellent non-profit organizations and agencies like The Resource Connection that augment county services,” says Reagan. “We want to examine how one of these groups is coping with a new set of challenges.”

Rounding out the meeting’s presentation will be an update by Murphys Business Association President Michelle Plotnik on the health of the stores and other establishments that line historic Main Street and beyond. New businesses are opening and others are closing at a time when tourist traffic is at its peak.

“Communities throughout our country have for decades used the Town Hall format to discuss issues of common interest,” says Reagan. “As always, we invite everyone to join us, listen to the presentations, ask questions, and to share their opinions.”

Following the more formal part of the meeting, there will be a social period following when conversations can continue.
Murphys Community Club presents Town Hall Meetings several times a year. The goal is to bring neighbors together with civic leaders to discuss subjects of mutual interest.
