Columbia College Presents 40th Commencement on May 1
Columbia College will hold its 40th Commencement on Friday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Oak Pavilion. A reception for the graduates, their families, friends and guests will be held immediately after the ceremony in Carkeet Park next to the pavilion. Among the graduating class, 123 associate in arts degrees will be conferred, 37 associate in science degrees, 14 associate in science (occupational education) degrees, and 49 certificates of achievement. Nine will graduate with distinction (cumulative grade point averages of 3.75 or better) and 24 with honors (between 3.5 and 3.74 grade point averages)......
Those who will receive both A.A. and A.S. or A.S.O.E. degrees are Nicholas Larry Anderson, Dana Michelle Baker, Robert C. Cavagnaro, Andrew Dana Collum, Samuel Joseph Fahle, Lara Ford, Maureen R. Goodman, Molly M. Jones, Johanan Raymond Raguel Kelleher, Jennifer Nicole Laios, Tara Louise Lamb, Arvilla Rose Langford, William David Lee, Deborah I. Payne, Lon Joseph Porter, Michelle Lee Rumery, Krysta Jane Sergent, and Sheila Marie Trampush.
In addition, both associate degrees and certificates will be presented to Dana Michelle Baker, Ernestine Viola Costa, Chelsea Dawn Garcia, Jocelyn Renee Gomes, Jennifer Lynn Horner, Molly M. Jones, Arvilla Rose Langford, Evelyn J. McFarland, Jake Jeramie Schlegel, Barbara Dee Shaw, Daniel Robert Timko Jr., Maurice E. A. Toich, Samantha Mary Wasson, and Cody Steven Werley.
Johnny Proctor, president of the Associated Students of Columbia College (ASCC), will deliver the welcome address. Lonnie Blansit, president of the classified senate and Anne Cavagnaro, president of the academic senate will convey the college’s welcome. The student graduation address will be delivered by Cody Ann Baker and the concluding student farewell by Judith Bennington.
Dr. Joan Smith, Columbia College president will introduce members of the class of 2009. She will be joined on-stage by Yosemite Community College District Trustees Pat Dean, vice chairperson (area 1); Desirree Abshire (area 2); and Abe Rojas (area 3), along with Chancellor Dr. Roe Darnell. Other YCCD guests include Diane Wirth, vice chancellor, human resources and Gina Rose, assistant chancellor, information technology.
Also assisting in the ceremonies will be Dr. Dennis Gervin, the college’s vice president for student learning; Connie Mical, vice president-administration; Michael Torok, dean of instructional services, arts and sciences; Gary Mendenhall; dean of instructional services, vocational education; and Melissa Raby, dean of student services. The Columbia College Big Band, under the direction of Dr. Rod Harris, will provide musical selections for the graduation.
