Columbia College Debate Team Scores Statewide Threepeat Victory!

Three consecutive state championship titles add up to a threepeat in anyone’s statistics. That’s exactly what the Columbia College speech and debate team achieved on the week of March 18-22 at Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles after successfully defending their state championship title again. “After intense rhetorical competitions, our team members found themselves at the top of the pack in the Overall Team Sweepstakes Award,” said Dr. Tim Elizondo, Columbia College forensics advisor. “This was based on the students’ cumulative record and performance in the five-day event.”....

"We are the Champions!"

Danielle Carmack garnered the top score for Columbia as she captured silver medals in both the impromptu speaking and the Lincoln/Douglas debate events. Carmack also earned a bronze medal in team parliamentary debate with her partner, Meghan Miller. Miller also earned a silver medal in Lincoln/Douglas debate and was named the second best speaker in the team debate category.

Two AAC (Academic Achievement Center) tutors, Sigil Blackwolf and Judith Bennington, each earned a bronze medal in the parliamentary team debate event. ASCC student senator Tom McDonnell garnered a bronze medal in the highly competitive impromptu speaking category.

“This prestigious victory truly had campus-wide representation as the team members represented students, who are also involved in the AAC, library, and student government, to name a few,” said Dr. Elizondo. “The team would like to extend a special thanks to Laurie Sylwester and Dr. Lynn Martin for their assistance in judging and coordinating valuable practice space.”
