Rare Gathering of Symphony Musicians from both San Francisco and the Foothills

Musical glory will reign in Angels Camp and Sutter Creek on the weekend of March 28 and 29 as the Orchestra of the Mother Lode Friends of Music performs three of the masterworks of the classical music repertory: the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro of W. A. Mozart, the Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra, also of Mozart, and Beethoven’s colossal Seventh Symphony....

The spring symphony concerts of the Friends of Music are always eagerly anticipated by the region’s music lovers as the highlight of the season. The excitement this year is heightened by the joint appearance of three distinguished guest artists from San Francisco: conductor Andrei Gorbatenko, head of the acclaimed San Francisco Academy Orchestra, violin soloist Florin Parvulescu, and viola soloist Yun Jie Liu, both members of the world-renowned San Francisco Symphony.

The performance on Saturday, March 28, is the finale of the six-concert season of the Ovations series of the Calaveras County Arts Council, and it will take place at the Bret Harte Theatre (323 Highway 49) in Angels Camp; the Sunday, March 29, performance will take place in the Church of the Nazarene, 14050 Ridge Road, in Sutter Creek. Both concerts start at 3 p.m.

Following the first rehearsal in preparation of the events, Gorbatenko stated his pleasure with the quality of the 50-piece orchestra : "The initial reading of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony—one of the most demanding in the literature—was most impressive. The array of talent that the Friends of Music has marshalled up here in the foothills is truly amazing. With two superb musicians, Florin Parvulescu and Jay Liu—both of whom I have worked with in the past—joining the orchestra as soloists in one of Mozart’s most beautiful works, the concerts on March 28 and 29 promise to be spectacular."

Florin Parvulsecu, a native of Romania, is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and the Julliard Preparatory School. He had been a member of the St. Louis and Baltimore symphonies before his appointment to the San Francisco Symphony in 1998. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed in music festivals and concerts venues around the world. An accomplished conductor as well, he will take the baton, at the invitation of Gorbatenko, to the lead the orchestra during the performance of the Mozart Sinfonia.

Yun Jie Liu, a native of Shanghai, is Acting Principal Violist of the San Francisco Symphony. Before joining the symphony in 1993 as Associate Principal Violist, he performed with the San Diego Symphony and the National Symphony in Washington. D.C. He received his training at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the University of Southern California, He has performed as soloist with orchestras around the world, including recent appearances with the Shanghai Symphony, and has served as guest principal violist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other ensembles.

Conductor Andrei Gorbatenko began his musical studies at the San Francisco School of the Arts and the University of California. His training as a conductor has included work with Alastair Neale, Associate Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony, and with the American Acadeny of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival. As a double bass player, he has performed in many of the world’s most prestigious concert venues and continues to play with symphonies and chamber music ensembles throughout Northern California. He is the founder and artistic director of the San Francisco Academy Orchestra, dedicated to giving aspiring young musicians the opportunity to perform with members of the San Francisco Symphony.

Reserved seating tickets to the March 28 concert are $25 for adults and $10 for children 18 and under, and may also be purchased at the office of the Calaveras County Arts Council at 22 Main street in San Andreas or at the door of the Bret Harte Theatre the day of the performance, starting at 2 :30 pm Tickets to the March 29 concert are $20 for adults.
