Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Association March Update ~By Warren Alford

Arnold, CA...In this issue of the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Update, you'll find out about this year's Scenic Celebration; get information about our new Facebook page (you can become a fan and check out yours truly grooming Snow Valley with my backside); receive information about upcoming events; learn about projects planned around Lake Alpine and even sign up as one of our newest members using our online membership form....

Bear Valley Springtime in the Sierra comes in fits and starts- one thing is for sure, if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will surely change! New blades of grass are emerging from the earth as winter's blanket of white snow slowly recedes at the Byway's lower elevations. Meanwhile, winter keeps her vice-grip hold on the upper reaches beckoning outdoor snow enthusiasts with the promise of brilliant sunny days sitting on the sundeck at Bear Valley Mountain listening to live music with a side of fresh corn snow and enjoying crisp, clear nights filled with dazzling stars in our ink-black skies.

The official opening of the pass is still a ways off- maybe it's time to initiate a pool to guess the correct date... the smart money is calling for sometime after Mother's Day and before Memorial Day- perhaps Frog Jump weekend (3rd weekend in May). We'll just have to wait and see- until then, I'm going to help myself to some more of that fresh corn snow- hope to see you out on the Byway!

Cheers! Warren Alford, Executive Director

Byway Facebook Pages ...

We've now got a Facebook page to help promote the Byway and give supporters another tool to connect with each other and to be a gathering place for sharing photos and stories of your special places that you can share with other Byway enthusiasts.

Right now there are a couple of albums to view and we hope that it will soon be populated with lots of fun user created content. Take a moment and visit the page, sign up as a fan and pass it along. Feel free to post your own photos or even your favorite campfire recipes.

Save the date! Scenic Celebration Scheduled

The 3rd annual Scenic Celebration is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2009. A planning meeting is being held this Wednesday, March 12th at 6pm at the Round Table Pizza Parlor in Arnold and everyone is invited to help out.

Scenic CelebrationThe Scenic Celebration highlights the scenic wonders of the Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway which is one of the most scenic drives across California's Sierra Nevada and is one of just seven nationally recognized Byways in California.

Now in its third year, the Byway event is becoming an exciting annual attraction. Last year's event had eight passport venues which were at Sarafina's Italian Kitchen in Arnold, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, The Dorrington Hotel, the Camp Connell General Store, Bear Valley Village, Lake Alpine Resort, Hermit Valley and Markleeville.

This year's event planning will include developing a theme for the Celebration, identifying event venues, developing a budget and outreach strategy and creating a promotional plan to expand the success of the event. Please join us in making this year's event a success. Call (209) 795-2672 or e-mail info@scenic4.org for more details.

New Membership Software

Our new membership software program is up and running. Memberships are the lifeblood for a small organization like ours. The new program allows supporters to join or renew by credit card and enables us to more efficiently manage the membership program so that we can devote more resources to the new projects underway along the Byway. If you'd like to become our newest member, you can go to: http://scenic4.org/join1.html.
Thanks for your support!

Byway Enhancements

New Kiosk The Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Association in partnership with the Calaveras Council of Governments, Cal Trans and the U.S. Forest Service is working hard to implement projects to benefit the Byway. We are currently working to develop a sign plan so that we can get our new National Scenic Byway signs installed this year and streamline existing signs so that the overall effect is more harmonious with the natural character of the Byway.

There is a strong focus this year is on improving facilities at Lake Alpine to enhance the winter SnoPark and increase accessibility for people of all abilities. We're seeking funds to create a new interpretive plan for the entire Byway and to create an interpretive kiosk in conjunction with the relocation of the ranger station from its current location just above Bear Valley to a new spot in the Winter SnoPark just before the entrance to Lake Alpine where the road closure takes effect in the winter. We're supporting the Forest Service's effort to develop a new amphitheater at Lake Alpine that will be available for Byway interpretive events and maybe even act as a satellite venue for the Bear Valley Music Festival in addition to the usual campfires and ranger programs. It's an exciting time to be involved in planning and protecting our Byway. All of the projects listed here require matching local funds which memberships help us to meet

Upcoming Events

In addition to some of the best skiing of the year, there are some great events planned at Bear Valley Mountain during March and April. On March 31st, the Country Snowfest rides onto the slopes with live music and lots of exciting cowboy action. April 4th is the Reggae on the Mountain brewfest with live music, a rail fest and a pond-skimming event which has quickly become one of the rites of spring. If you haven't been to a pond-skimming event, you're never too old to strap on a speedo and head out for a new adventure. Help close out another great season by signing up for the Slush Cup fun race on April 18th. Check out Bear Valley's website for more details: www.bearvalley.com

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Association. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any thoughts or comments.

Warm regards,

Warren Alford, Executive Director
