Guest Host Special Advisor David Crane Discusses Federal Economic Stimulus Projects for California in Governor’s Weekly Radio Address

Sacramento, CA...Hi, this is David Crane, Special Adviser to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for Jobs and Economic Growth filling in for the Governor with this week’s California Report. Just 1 month after President Obama signed his economic stimulus package into law, we are already seeing big dividends here in California. Last week the California Transportation Commission approved $625 million in federal stimulus funds for 57 projects up and down the state...

This could create more than 11,000 jobs, not within years, but within weeks and months.

We plan to break ground on some of these projects in 60 days or less.

On Wednesday the Governor visited one of the project sites in the Central Valley.

Back in 2004 we identified 4 bridges along Highway 99 that are what engineers call “structurally deficient.”

This means they may not survive a catastrophic earthquake or other big disaster.

But for 5 long years, this project has been sitting on a waiting list.

We simply haven’t had the money. Now because of the President and Congress, we can finally move forward.

This bridge project alone will mean more than 800 jobs for the local economy.

And this 625 million is just the first wave of stimulus dollars for transportation.

California will likely receive about $4 billion more for roads, highways, bridges and transit.

This is the perfect shot-in-the-arm for our economy, and the Governor thanks President Obama and Secretary LaHood for their terrific work.

They know infrastructure is a great way to invest in the future and create great-paying jobs, right away.

That is why here in California, we have been leading the way on infrastructure.

In 2006 the people joined the Governor and approved $42 billion for highways, schools, levees, housing, and more.

Last year we approved an additional $10 billion for high speed rail.

Governor Schwarzenegger has also joined Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form a bipartisan coalition called Building America’s Future.

They are joining forces with leaders from across the nation, to push the federal government to invest even more in infrastructure.

And yesterday, the three of them had a terrific meeting with President Obama at the White House to hammer home their message.

And that message is simple:

Millions of Americans and Californians are struggling.

We have an entire army that is sitting on the sidelines eager for just a little help to get back on their feet.

Let’s give them that help and let’s put that army back to work rebuilding our state and our nation.

On behalf of Governor Schwarzenegger, this is David Crane.
