Murphys Community Park Transformed into Queen's Court During Murphys Irish Day Celebration
Murphys, CA......The Murphys Community Park, scene of family picnics, weddings, duck races, civic events, and musical concerts, will be transformed into the 1562 Royal Court of Mary, Queen of Scots during Murphys Irish Day, Saturday, March 21st......
While the historic town’s Main Street is bustling with people, young and old, exploring the more than 100 vendor booths, enjoying a variety of foods and beverages, and watching one of the best parades in the Mother Lode, the Royal Saint Gyles Renaissance Actors Guild will be encamped beside the creek enjoying the dancing and other pleasures of a bygone era.
The Guild is a living history reenactment group that recreates the Royal Court, including the Queen’s Royal Military Escort, in the years from 1561 – 1566. The setting is the travels of the Scottish Queen through the lowland and highland villages of Scotland in the early part of her reign. These were later called the Royal Progresses of Queen Mary.
When the Queen journeyed away from the capitol city of Edinburgh, hundreds of folk who were connected with the Queen’s government and household accompanied her. These included Royal Lancers and Gentleman in Arms, Ladies in Waiting, Masters and Mistresses that ran the royal household and any royal guests and lords that were in attendance in the queen’s service.
The Queen and her entourage will leave the park at 11 a.m. to join the other participants in the Murphys Irish Day Parade. She will give her blessing to the multitude lining the parade route in commemoration of Saint Patrick and to any and all with Celtic heritage.
During the rest of the day, Saint Gyles will also be presenting a reenactment of Mary’s court at the park gazebo on Algiers Road. Visitors are encouraged to meet the Queen, take pictures, meet and talk with guild members and participate in courtly dancing with the Queens’s lords and ladies.
Murphys Irish Day is presented each year by the Murphys Business Association with proceeds making it possible for the association to fulfill its goals of sponsoring projects that enhance the community and beautify the business district.
