“DIY BRIDE” ~ By Hanna Alldrin

Calaveras County, CA……Another Great Addition to ThePineTree.net....The Pine Tree “DIY BRIDE” is a new column by staff writer and photographer, Hanna Alldrin. Every Wednesday Hanna will be posting new and innovative wedding ideas from decorations, attire, favors, flowers and more that any “DIY” (Do It Yourself) Bride can do....especially on a budget. This week’s “DIY BRIDE” topic is How to Make Your Wedding Dress Unique with embellishments, color and waistbands……

A beautiful Wedding Dress with added waist band, silk flowers and color.

One of the first items a bride will look for when planning a wedding is that perfect wedding dress for her special day. You only get one chance at a wedding dress, so you want it to be something truly incredible. More and more brides are customizing their gowns with antique pins that may have been passed down from a grandmother, large silk flowers, color and much more. Any “DIY BRIDE” can add a small twist to an inexpensive dress and make it look like a million dollars.

For my wedding my grandmother (granny) gave me a beautiful antique pin that I pinned on the back of my dress. The pin added an old French look to and also fulfilled my "something borrowed." I also added a brown silk ribbon at the waist. I purchased four yards of inexpensive ribbon at a craft store and tied it around my waist, them pinned my grandmothers pin where the bow was tied. This whole addition to my dress cost less than $10.

When deciding if adding a unique touch is right you might want to consider what style your wedding is and does the addition fit into your own personal dream. When adding color to your dress, try to limit the dress to two colors. If you add more than two colors it might look like a special occasion dress rather than a wedding dress.

Here are two wonderful examples: the dress can be a simple white with an added green ribbon to the waist or as the tie for a lace up back or when ordering your dress the bodice could be a champagne color and the skirt could be ivory. This is actually a good option if this is your second wedding and you are not comfortable wearing a totally white dress.

Also take into account the type of jewels and embellishments you might want on your dress. Jewels can be added when ordered or you can add them yourself in silk flowers, sashes, coats and shoulder covers. Jewels can make all the difference on a plain dress. You could add small topaz colored jewels for a fall wedding or red rubies for a Christmas wedding. The embellishments can go along the neckline, on the skirt, or at the edge of the sleeves. But most importantly have fun and make your dress unique and special to you, its your day and you’re the one wearing the dress.
