BloodSource of Sacramento Held a Blood Drive on Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Angels Camp, Hosted by the Mother Lode Knights of Columbus

Angels Camp, CA....To meet the daily demand for blood, BloodSource must collect an average of 700 units of blood a day. Half the blood supply comes from donors who visit our community donor centers. Half comes from donors who sign up for mobile blood drives sponsored by their local community, place of worship or employer....

Some reporters will do almost anything for a story!
Here staff writer Victor Claveau donates blood.

Giving blood is one of the most generous acts of kindness that one human being can do for another. Every day, the outpouring of gratitude expressed by blood recipients gives testimony to this fact. Stories like these remind us that from the very young to the very old, lives are touched by every pint of blood transfused. When you give blood, yes, you do save lives.

As a volunteer blood donor, you can choose the type of donation you want to give. All types of blood donation are very important. To find out what type of donation is most needed at this time, please call 1-866-82 BLOOD.

Whole blood donations allow you to help as many as three patients with different needs with just one donation. Whole blood donation takes about an hour of your time. Actual blood donation takes about 5-7 minutes.

Hemapheresis donations allow you to give a concentrated amount of just one component of the blood: platelets, plasma or red blood cells. Hemapheresis donation takes from one to two hours of your time.

Autologous donations allow you to donate blood for your own use in advance of a surgery where significant blood loss is anticipated. Started in 1974, this program was one of the first in the country.

BloodSource is committed to grow with our communities and to consistently provide a readily available, safe blood supply. We do this by doing what’s right: Meeting the needs of patients, physicians, hospitals and donors.

Blood donations provide life-saving treatments to accident victims, surgery patients, cancer patients and many others in need. Thanks to the generosity of donors throughout Northern and Central California, we are the source for every drop of blood used by over 40 hospitals in 25 counties – from Merced to the Oregon border, from Vacaville to Lake Tahoe. And, we are the source around the nation, even around the world, for other blood centers that simply cannot go it alone.

Walk-ins are encouraged and child care is usually available.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. When you arrive at the blood drive, your first 20-30 minutes will involve registration and review of your medical history. Temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and blood iron levels are then checked. Actual blood donation takes about 5-7 minutes, followed by a 15 minute rest and refreshment period.

To give blood, you must:
• be in generally good health, free from cold or flu symptoms for at least 48 hours before giving blood.
• be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent) There is no upper age limit.
• weigh at least 110 pounds.
• bring photo identification or BloodSource donor card.
You cannot give blood if you:
• had hepatitis after age 10.
• have or had heart problems (high blood pressure that is under control is okay; however, it must not be higher than 180 systolic and 100 diastolic).
• are pregnant or have been pregnant in the last six weeks.
• are taking antibiotics for infection. (See medications below for more information.)
• have AIDS, are at risk for AIDS, or have had sexual contact with anyone at risk for AIDS.
• had leukemia or myeloma; okay for superficial skin cancer. Most other types of cancer are acceptable if symptom free one year after last treatment.

BloodSource welcomes the opportunity speak to your group about the many ways you can join us as we work to save lives throughout Northern and Central California and beyond. Speakers are available on a number of subjects including the importance of a safe and adequate blood supply, the safety of the blood supply, transfusion medicine, community service, volunteer opportunities, or the National Marrow Donor Program. For more information or to schedule a speaker, please contact Leslie Botos at (916) 453-3713 or (800) 995-4420.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed at all of the 15 Northern and Central California locations. Perhaps you --or someone you love -- has received blood and you would like to make a difference in someone else’s life. Perhaps you’re a blood donor who wants to do even more than you already do. Whatever your motivation, we are grateful for your interest in becoming a BloodSource volunteer.

If you are willing to give your time and can provide cheerful customer service to our donors and guests, you are qualified to be a BloodSource volunteer.

Because we want you to truly become part of BloodSource, we ask that you make at least a six-month commitment.

Every volunteer receives basic orientation, job and customer service training. Federal and state laws require that every volunteer also attend safety training. Safety training takes less than two hours and is offered at most BloodSource locations.

Volunteer Inquiries (916) 453-3793 or volunteers@bloodsource.org
