wildlife from other parts of the world, as well as our own Sierra foothills. Some of the animals displayed were already located on campus in the Toyon exhibit and others are on loan from the Osterberg collection, currently housed at the Great Valley Museum/Modesto Junior College.
Sponsored as part of the college’s 40th anniversary celebrations, “It’s a Jungle out there!” is an educational exhibit that will features a number of whole mount taxidermy specimens from Africa and North and South America. You see an African lion, Roan antelope, Grant’s gazelle, oribi, hyena, leopard, coyote, baboon, mountain lion, ocelot, jaguar, timber wolf, bighorn sheep, great horned owl and armadillo. Partial mounts include a grizzly bear, elk, moose, water buffalo, warthog and others. Live animals will also be on display and among them, a gopher snake, California desert tortoise, Columbian red-tailed boa, largemouth bass and a blue-tongued skink.
The exhibit is intended to create an awareness of Columbia College and South American and North American animal life for prospective students and the general public.
School tours may be scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 10 a.m. for 45 minutes each until 2 p.m. Age appropriate activities will be available during tour times such as “passport” stamps, photo opportunities with the animals and educational dialogue regarding biology and natural resources.
A public viewing of these magnificent animals is a rare and exceptional opportunity. Therefore, while Columbia College does not condone nor affirm the practice of big game hunting, we simply have access to this resource and wanted to share it with the community.
