Crime Prevention Advisory Don't Be a Victim on Internet Pirates
The Sheriffs office has recently received several variations of the same e-mail scam. The target receives an official looking e-mail from a financial institution. It advises the recipient that, "all users must confirm their bank ATM Card with our existing database". It goes on to state "To reactivate your card, please call ---- ---- -------." It is, of course, a hoax to get information with which to access your account. A financial institution...
would never ask you to verify your account particulars online.
How to Protect Yourself
1) Never provide personal financial information, including your Social Security Number, account
numbers or passwords, over the internet or over the phone in communication you did not initiate.
2) Never click on any link provided in an e-mail you believe to be suspect. It may lead to a bogus website
or contain a virus that could contaminate your computer.
3) If you believe the communication might be legitimate, contact the financial institution yourself, using
only the phone numbers or web location found on your account statements.
4) Do not be intimidated by an e-mail or caller who suggests dire consequences if you do not immediately
provide or verify financial information.
5) Report all suspicious contacts to the Federal Trade Commission through the internet at
www.consumer.!!Ov/idtheft, or by callng 1-877-IDTHEFT.
What to Do If You If You Fall Victim:
1) If you have disclosed sensitive information in a phishing scheme, you should contact your financial
institution immediately and notify account management of the situation.
2) You should also contact the fraud division of the three major credit bureaus and place a fraud alert on
your fie. This will help prevent thieves from opening new accounts in your name.
Equifax 800-525-6285; Esperian 888-307-3742; TransUnion 800-680-7289.
3) Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission (contact information above
