Upcoming Parkinson's Disease & Neurological Support Group Presentations

Calaveras County, CA....The Parkinsons Disease support group "San Andreas Movers & Shakers...it's not OUR fault!" announces monthly presentations for February through April. The group, which meets the first Tuesday of every month at the Calaveras Central Library in San Andreas from 9:30 AM - 12:00 NOON, welcomes patients, caregivers, family members and friends impacted by Parkinsons Disease and other neurological disorders. Interested community members are invited to join in the advocacy, education, friendship and support. There is no cost to attend meetings and reservations are not needed......

On Tuesday, February 3rd, the group will have a presentation by Brenda McDaniel, Coordinator for the Calaveras County Senior Peer Counseling program. The Senior Peer Counseling program is sponsored by the Calaveras County Behavioral Health Department, which extensively trains volunteers to offer support to seniors who may otherwise be isolated and alone. Training areas includes communication skills, dealing with depression and anxiety and grief counseling as well as facing the reality of natural aging. There is no charge to participate in this unique program. Members of the public who would like to know more about the program are invited to attend the February 3rd meeting or call Brenda at 754-6642.

Also in February, our own talented PD artist Cindy Deluz will lead us in a healing art project. Cindy's art ability did not show itself until she was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease, when her creative juices came pouring forth! The woman who had never held a brush in her hand prior to PD now works in several mediums and has art displayed in The Parkinsons Institute in Sunnyvale. Take a look at her talents on her website: www.apurpledaisy.com.

Tuesday, March 3rd will bring an educational presentation by Elizabeth Thompson of Common Ground, Inc. which is the agency who provides MANY senior services, including home-delivered and congregate meals, Chore and Homemaker programs, and medical transportation. Elizabeth will describe each program in detail and make sure everyone who is interested has contact literature. Common Ground serves seniors in both Amador and Calaveras counties. If you would like to learn more about the Common Ground programs, please join us for this meeting or call Elizabeth at 223-3015.

Everyone needs to know what to do in case a loved one needs at-home health care. The April 7th meeting will explain in detail the services offered by United Home Care and United Personal Care Services, which serve seniors in Amador and Calaveras counties. You can rest assured that United in-home health care providers are responsible, well trained and have had background checks. Providing in-home health care by a professional agency may give you the option of keeping your loved one at home longer.

If you have questions about Parkinsons Disease or want to schedule an educational talk for members of your group or organization, please call Sarah Johnson at (209)296.2575. proACTIVE parkinsons project information is on the internet at: www.proactiveparkinsons.org.
