Relay for Life Team Captain Meeting~by Victor R. Claveau
Angels Camp, CA....The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life meeting, hosted by Patty Turcotte, Stephanie Arrich, and Gerry Sachs, was held on January 15, 2009. There were 25 in attendance; about 20 returning teams and 5 new teams were formed. A CD presentation was shown which explained the origin and purpose of the Relay for Life. 25 years ago, Relay for Life founder, Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, decided that something more needed to be done about this devastating disease that destroyed so many lives. In 1988, in Washington DC, he walked for 24 hours around a collage campus; one man with a dream raised $27,000 to fight cancer....
The CD presentation was followed by Gerry Sachs, the Online Chairperson, who explained how to register a team and or become a team member through the Internet. Online registration is strongly encouraged. You can register at http:www.relayforlife.org/calaverascountyca.
Coach Dustyn, a teacher at Toyon Middle School, agreed to be the Youth Team Captain Chairperson. She shared some great fund raising ideas for youth participation and is anxious to further share these ideas and experiences with youth team captains. Coach Dustyn may be contacted at dustyn@calaveras.k12.ca.us.
Business Card and Sponsorship program was also discussed. Each sponsor will receive a Relay for Life T-shirt and be mentioned in the program. A $100.00 (tax deductible) donation will secure a business card size advertisement.
Relay for Life members will be in the Murphys’ Irish Days parade and have an informational booth. If you are a cancer survivor, they would love to have you come by the booth and sign up. Patty Turcotte, a two-time cancer survivor, explained, “Survivors are the Heart of our Relay and we would love to have every one of them in Calaveras County to join us and let us celebrate their life. We will also have relay and team registration information. There will be brochures about the American Cancer Society and very important information about the patient services they have to offer.”
Team Recruitment and Survivor Recruitment was discussed. A Relay is nothing without its teams and Survivors. It is everyone’s responsibility to help recruitment. If you would like more information on the Relay for Life, contact www.relayforlife,org/calaverascountyca. For information on the local Relay contact Stephanie Arrich at mkstevie@comcast.net or Patty Turcotte 795-2316.
ThePineTree.net will again be broadcasting the Relay for Life this year for the full 24 hours, so be sure to stay tuned.
