Algiers Street Walking Bridge Senior Project By Ryan Heryford
Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2017 08:35 PM
Murphys, CA...Algiers Street Walking Bridge Sponsorship. To Murphys Community Supporters, I am writing you this letter to tell you of a community concern of mine. The Algiers Street road bridge near Murphys Park has been a safety hazard for local pedestrians for a long time. Tourists and locals find the Black Bart Theater parking lot a great place to park, but they must cross the dangerous one-lane road bridge to walk to the park, Veterans Memorial and Main Street. On popular weekends, the bridge becomes a bottleneck and can get jammed up with both pedestrians and vehicles. I have been working on a solution to fix this unsafe situation. My project consists of the installation of a 60’ walking bridge, parallel to the existing Algiers Street road bridge (See attached image). This bridge has been my Eagle Scout and Senior Project for the past year. The walking bridge area has been surveyed, engineered, had a wetlands study done and is now ready for construction.

Jerusalem, IL...Tens of thousands of Orthodox Jews gathered yesterday (Tuesday) to protest Israel's Military Draft Law, resulting in the forced enlistment of many Orthodox Jews. The protestors also decried Israel's brutal tactics to crack down peaceful protestors. The demonstration was organized by the Edah HaChareidis – a Rabbinic umbrella association representing hundreds of Orthodox Jewish congregations with a combined membership of over 250,000. During the protest, leading Rabbis sharply attacked Israel's conscription policy, passed in 2014, curtailing a 60 year old policy exempting all Yeshiva students from military service. Since then, many who refused to enlist were incarcerated for weeks and even months under brutal conditions. Those who peacefully protest those policies are subject to harsh punishments as well.
U.S. Census Bureau Daily Feature for March 29: Mom and Pop Businesses
Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2017 07:48 AM
Washington, DC...Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau: Profile America — Wednesday, March 29th. While shoppers and communities often welcome the opening of a major department store or a branch of a big-box chain, they are also the cause of some concern. Small local businesses face greater competition, yet those small businesses are an outsized engine of economic growth. Additionally, they are important distinguishing features in local communities. That's why today is Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. In 2012, there were nearly 28 million business firms in the U.S., but only 5.4 million of them had paid employees. In that group, over 2.7 million-- about half-- were enterprises having four or fewer employees. Almost 10 million of America's business enterprises are women-owned. You can find current data on the country's economy by downloading the 'America's Economy' mobile application at www.census.gov/mobile.
