LECTURE "Gold Rush Medicine" by Dr. Bob LaPerriere |
Immigrants traveling to California for the Gold Rush were subjected to numerous devastating diseases at a time when doctors were unable to provide specific treatment and many of the doctors were really not doctors. Thousands died from various epidemics at a time in history when the most advanced medical treatment consisted of bleeding, cupping, purging and the use of "drugs" such as mercury and arsenic.
The presentation "Gold Rush Medicine" will explore these experiences using details from historical diaries and letters to bring the past alive.
Dr. Bob LaPerriere is a retired medical doctor and historian. Upon retirement from Permanente (Kaiser) Medical Group in 1998, LaPerriere had time to continue his 30-year interest in local medical history. He currently is the curator of the Museum of Medical History, Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society.
Program will be held in the Carriage House at the Museum
