Wet Weather Driving Tips From TCSO
Sonora, CA...Driving in heavy rain can cause the potential of poor visibility and hydroplaning. If you’re going too fast and end up hydroplaning keep in the direction you want to go and do not brake hard. With all of the flooding brought on by the heavy rain, do not get in too deep. If water is covering the markings on the road, it’s too deep to drive on. You can lose control with as little as three inches of water on the road.
Take your time and slow down. Waiting a few minutes, rather than rushing to your destination, can be a safer plan when it is raining. Hold off on unnecessary trips. Turn your headlights on to help other vehicles see you. Many states require the use of headlights during rain, even in broad daylight. Give other vehicles more space. Add 1-2 extra seconds of following time in the rain, which gives you and the cars behind you more time to react to traffic or hazards.
