Thoughts on Resolutions~By Karen Wildwood

It’s about that time of year again. The one where we’ve all made resolutions for the New Year and we’ve made a really good beginning of them, only to find out, within a very short time, that maybe we’re not as dedicated to them as we thought....

Our ability to fall off the resolution wagon so quickly begs the question of, ‘Why do we make them anyway?’

For a lot of us, the resolutions center around becoming better in some way. Whether that better takes the form of spending more time with our loved ones, weighing less, exercising more, eating more healthfully or just getting started on that long awaited hobby or project that has laid dormant for years or keeps on popping up in our mind with the regularity of a mental cuckoo clock.

It seems there is something in the becoming better part of us that actually does spur us on, if only for a minute or two. And it is this aspect of ourselves that leads us to make resolutions for the coming year with some of us actually achieving our goals and some of us letting life get in the way.

And, let’s face it life does get in the way. Worldwide, people are becoming increasingly busy just to survive, we multi-task in a way that never seems to give us any down time to follow our own dreams and resolutions, let alone connect with others in a way that actually facilitates relationships. The catch-22 of this is, that we feel like we are so connected that we don’t know what to do when we’re not connected.

Case in point, have you ever had your internet connection go down? Then after spending a lot of time trying to get reconnected with no luck, experience the restlessness and sheer disconnected feeling that that brings up? Less than ten years ago we all knew what to do with ourselves when we weren’t connected. Now, it’s an oddity if we aren’t able to access our internet accounts, cell phone services or any number of other gadgets that keep us connected to the world.

Sometimes begin connected actually keeps us from living the life we want to instead of fostering it, which brings back the idea of resolutions made once a year. The time of reflection as to what we resolve to do in the upcoming year does just that, it gives us time to reflect on what’s important and what’s not, all the while allowing us to formulate some sort of plan of how to achieve what we want to do. Hopefully we all get that far with our resolutions, making sure we make a plan and then at least try to follow it.

The fact that we let life get in the way of making our resolutions a reality shouldn’t stop us from making them. Becoming better in some way is a lofty goal even if it is only for a week or two. And, besides, you know you can always come back to your goal, you just don’t have to wait for next year to do it.
