Shots Fired After A Vehicle Collision. Multiple Charges For Rail Road Flat Woman

Mountain Ranch, CA...On March 27th at approximately 10:40am Calaveras Sheriff;s Deputies responded to assist CHP Officers with a single vehicle collision in Mountain Ranch on Wharregard Road. Deputies and Officers found a pickup truck on its side off of the roadway. The driver of the vehicle was not at the scene. They also noticed blood at the scene. During the investigation they learned that the driver was possible at a residence near the 2600 block of Rail Road Flat Road. The deputies and CHP Officer responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check on the female driver, identified as 31 year old Satshabad Khalsa of Rail Road Flat.

Upon arrival the deputies and CHP Officer heard yelling coming from a small, one room cabin on the property. They responded to the disturbance and located Khalsa inside the cabin. As they approached the front door two adult female witnesses inside told the deputies that Khalsa had a knife. As the deputies and CHP Officer got closer they observed a struggle between Khalsa and the witnesses, who were trying to remove the knife from Khalsa.

Prior to the arrival of the deputies the witnesses were reportedly in a struggle to regain control of a two year old child that Khalsa was allegedly trying to forcibly remove from one of the witnesses arms. Fearing for the safety of the witnesses, a deputy deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Khalsa, but the taser had little effect on her.

Khalsa then charged at the deputies with the knife in her hand. The two deputies, fearing that they were going to be stabbed, each fired one shot from their duty handguns. Khalso threw the knife and fell to the ground inside the cabin and was immediately taken into custody. Neither Khalsa nor the responding deputies and CHP Officer were injured.

Arrestee Khalsa was transported to Mark Twain Medical Center where she was medically cleared. She was later booked into the Calaveras County Jail on charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, not a firearm, on a peace officer, False Imprisonment, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Child Cruelty and Assault with a Deadly Weapon, not a firearm.

The two deputies were placed on three days administrative leave per policy and standard operating procedure following an officer involved shooting. This incident is still under investigation. No further information is available at this time.
