Angels Camp PD K-9 Association Seeking Help To Replace Kain

Angels Camp, CA...The Angels Camp Police Department K-9 Association is requesting some assistance from the community, to replace a valued member of the Angels Camp PD team. As previously mentioned in an earlier press release, police service dog Kain passed away on 10-30-15.

Kain provided service to the community beginning in January of 2012, and during his nearly 4 years of service he assisted with the apprehension of numerous criminals, as well as locating dangerous drugs. The mission statement of the Angels Camp Police Department K-9 program is, "to provide a high level of quality service and protection to our community, and to lend support to our field officers. Professional service is provided by locating, controlling and apprehending criminal suspects, locating narcotics and other contraband, crowd control, locating missing persons, and public awareness demonstrations. The canine teams are proud to be a daily deployed and utilized resource provided to the citizens of Angels Camp and the surrounding community." Our K-9 teams have been a valued resource that serve the citizens of Angels Camp, as well as our allied agencies and residents and visitors in the surrounding communities.

With the passing of police service dog Kain, there is now only one K-9 team left in Angels Camp, and the entire county, that can provide this level of service to the community. The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department currently has a single-purpose narcotic detection K-9 team, however that team is limited to the location of narcotics and associated contraband. The Angels Camp Police Department had two cross-trained police service dog teams, trained for narcotic detection and patrol duties, to allow one of the teams to be available to respond to calls for service, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. In addition to their work related use, the teams have been utilized by both public schools in Angels Camp to assist with deterring narcotics and contraband on their campuses.

The Angels Camp Police Department K-9 Association is working toward locating and purchasing a replacement police service dog, and that is why we are asking for some help from the community. Kain was donated to the police department and came to us already trained for patrol duties, and was later trained and certified for narcotics detection work. To purchase a replacement dog that has similar capabilities will cost approximately $10,000.00. In an effort to help raise funds for a replacement police service dog, the Angels Camp Police Department K-9 Association has set up an account at the US Bank in Angels Camp. Any community members interested in making a donation toward this cause are asked to go to the US Bank in Angels Camp, where the donation can be made directly to the "Sierra Foothills / San Joaquin Valley Law Dogs Police K-9" account.

The association would like to thank the community in advance for any and all support, and as this effort continues we will keep everyone informed as to our progress.
