Results from the 47th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Bee

San Andreas, CA...It was an exciting night at the 47th Annual Calaveras County Spelling Bee that took place on Thursday, April 23rd at the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks gymnasium. There were 58 students that were in attendance from the following schools...

• Avery Middle School
• Calaveras High School
• Christian Family Learning Center
• Copperopolis Elementary
• Jenny Lind Elementary
• Mark Twain Elementary
• Mokelumne Hill Elementary
• Mountain Oaks School
• San Andreas Elementary
• Toyon Middle School
• Valley Springs Elementary

Superintendent Kathy Northington, the Moderator of the event, read words from the Marin County Junior High Spelling Word List. There were three levels of words containing a total of fifty words that were read to all the students. At the end of the night, the top two spellers that remained in the competition were Cleriza Estoesta and Maxwell Stickels, both 9th graders from Calaveras High School. With a rule stating that a student can only miss four words before being eliminated from the competition, Miss Estoesta and Mr. Stickels continued to spell through the fifty words, at which time an additional sixteen words had to be pulled from the Spelling Word List to continue the competition. The winning word was oneiromancy. Miss Estoesta and Mr. Stickels are the top two students moving on to the California State Junior High Spelling Bee Championship held Saturday, May 2, 2015 in San Rafael, CA.
