Film Release and World Premier: 88 Days in the Motherlode…Mark Twain finds his Voice!
Angels Camp, CA...Join us for the World Premiere of Mark Twain’s 88 Days in the Mother Lode. Doors open at 6:30, the trouble begins at 7:30! To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sam Clemens’ visit to Angels Camp, This ‘n That Films, in partnership with Greenhorn Creek Resort and CAMPS Restaurant, will present their new documentary on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at Bret Harte Theatre in Angels Camp....
Through professional actor Tom Maguire, from Sonora, CA, as the voice of Mark Twain, the film explores in unprecedented detail how Clemens spent his time in the gold mining town during these 88 days hiding from critics, debt collectors, the law, and propelling himself from the depths of depression to reinvigorating a career that led to international stardom.
Days after his 29th birthday at the end of November in 1864, Samuel Clemens was broke and in debt. He posted a $500 bail bond for a friend with money he didn't have. The friend jumped bail and Clemens had to get out of San Francisco. He sought refuge in the cabin of a friend on Jackass Hill in Tuolumne County. He would spend the next 88 days drinking a little, smoking a little, mining a little and listening to a lot of story-telling. One day, sheltering from a rainstorm at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, he heard the story of a jumping frog. When he returned to San Francisco, he wrote the story under his Mark Twain pen name and ignited his career as America's foremost writer and humorist. This documentary film takes an in-depth and entertaining look at those pivotal 88 Days in the life of Samuel Clemens and the career of Mark Twain. “Most of us know that this is where he heard the story about the frog,” says John C. Brown, director/producer of the film. “But there is more to his adventure here than just that one story. We’re looking forward to sharing with the world what really happened with Clemens during those 88 days and how they had a profound influence on Mark Twain’s career as a writer and lecturer.”
Samuel Langhorne Clemens is returning to Northern California’s Gold Country. The acclaimed American author and humorist, best known by his pen name Mark Twain, who spent nearly three months in this historic Gold Country town during the winter of 1864-1865, will reappear via the world film premiere of 88 Days in the Motherlode: Mark Twain Finds His Voice
Following the film debut here is a Champagne and Dessert Reception with Producers and Members of the Cast immediately following at CAMPS Restaurant in Angels Camp.
