Talking Conditions & Snow Making At Bear Valley With Kevin Bernido
Bear Valley, CA...We had the chance to talk about Bear Valley's Season and how their increased snow making means they are open and thriving when Dodge Ridge and some other resorts have closed pending more natural snow. Bear Valley has virtually the entire upper mountain open. Snow making is becoming a vital and integral part of running a viable ski resort in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. One of the first things Skyline did upon taking over was repair, tune up, and get the snow making equipment ready for the season. So now basically when overnight temps drop they have the guns blowing on every run that has water lines in place and snow making is an integral part of future plans...
This Video Was Shot Last Sunday Afternoon. The Guy On The Right It is Kevin Bernido. The Guy On The Left Is Well...Doesn't Look Like He Belongs On A Ski Slope. Just In Case You Might Want To View The Video In HD
A Few Shots From Last Weekend
This has helped Bear Valley to not only have a good season so far but in our humble opinion provide them an opportunity to highlight Bear Valley as one of the best resorts in California for year in year out skiable conditions.
On heavy snow years with Grizzley Bowl and Village Side runs open Bear Valley is close to Sugar Bowl in size with a great mix of intermediate and expert terrain.
On lean snow years they can still provide over 900 acres of terrain and with their increased snow making on of your best days skiing might be a great, moderate temp, sunny day taking run after run on groomed corduroy.
In adding area veterans like Tim Shimke to the grooming crew they ad multi-generational knowledge of someone who literally grew up at Bear Valley and knows instinctively the best way to groom each run. From years of not only skiing but walking, mountain biking and recreating at Bear Valley in the summer as well guys like Tim know how to spread the snow where it is needed to provide as much skiable terrain as possible.
We know Skyline executives were probably hoping for a wet, wet winter but in many ways this year may be their best advertisement for how they intend to make Bear Valley a complete year-round destination regardless of what mother nature provides.
The entire community of Bear Valley is a special place for many of us and so far Skyline has shown they intend to be great stewards of it's present and hopefully great future.
