January 31 Introduction to Aquabord with Dale Laitinen 10:00 am – 2:30 pm Open to all levels

Learn the basics of Aquabord with watercolor master, Dale Laitinen. This is an alternative surface to painting on paper. The advantages are more brilliant colors and no need for glassing and framing in the traditional watercolor way. This class will give you the start you need to experience this new painting surface. Aquabord is a forgiving surface that will allow easy lifting of color. (Class is limited to 12 students.)



Dale Laitinen is best known for his watercolor paintings of the mountains and deserts of the Western United States. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. Laitinen has conducted workshops throughout the United States and in France. He lives and works in Mountain Ranch, California.



February 21 Creativity with Oil Pastels with Doug Lawler 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm Open to all levels

In this class participants will examine new ways to tap into the creative self. We will explore the role our subconscious plays in creating art. Discover new and innovative ways to use oil pastels on paper (Class is limited to 8 students.)



Doug Lawler is best known for his copper plate etching prints and his pastel works of art. His career has taken him all over the world where his work has been exhibited in galleries and honored with awards, including San Francisco where he helped found a print-making collective, and Barcelona, Spain where he worked and exhibited in galleries for over 12 years. For a time he worked as a free-lance fine arts conservator at the Oakland Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the San Francisco Palace of Legion of Honor Museum. In recent years he’s made a return to creating art in pastel and printmaking.



February 28 Practical Color Mixing in Watercolor with Dale Laitinen 10:00 am – 2:30 pm Open to all levels

More than just color theory, this workshop will introduce you to the practice of color mixing. Learn what colors are actually in your paint tubes and how they mix with each other. This gives you a head-start for other workshops and will make your painting experience more exciting. (Class is limited to 12 students.)


March 14 Encaustics—Beyond the Basics with Suzanne Bell 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Open to all levels

This one day encaustic workshop focuses on the safety, studio set up, history of encaustics, and several encaustic painting techniques. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn how to fuse with iron, carve to define shapes, discover layers of color by scraping, and use tape for line and design. Students will also explore the use of various encaustic tools such as blow torches, heat guns, the stylus, oil sticks, and many more unique gadgets! Several encaustic masterpieces will be created by each participant by the end of the workshop. (Class is limited to 10 students.)



March 15 Encaustics: Texture and Collage with Suzanne Bell 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Encaustic experience required

Take your art to the next level. We’ll focus on the more advanced techniques available in the encaustic art world, such as, grout, impressions, stamping, oil staining, antiquing, image transfers, embedded elements, water designs, fun papers, charcoal, graphite, metallic powders, and much more! Students will complete several encaustic masterpieces. Come to have fun, dress for mess. (Class is limited to 10 students.)



Suzanne Bell is a Northern California artist and art instructor known for her inspirational teaching style and her contemplative encaustic paintings. For the last 20 years she has been designing, implementing, and teaching fine arts programs for artists of all ages within the Northern California region. She teaches at Sierra College, Crocker Art Museum, and both in the private and public school sectors.



March 28 Learn the Techniques to Painting Clouds with Dale Laitinen 10:00 am – 2:30 pm Open to all levels

Watercolor is the perfect medium to paint skies and clouds. In this one-day class we will paint it all from rain clouds to sunset clouds. Effective skies will make all your landscapes more dramatic. Join us, the sky is the limit. (Class is limited to 12 students.)
