Railtown 1897 Offers Two More Behind-the-Scenes Shop Tours in 2014 Special Viewing Opportunities Include Repair Work on Sierra No. 28

Jamestown, CA...Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) will offer just two more behind-the-scenes Shop Tours of the historic site in 2014. The unique and very popular tours will be available on Tuesday, October 14 and Tuesday, November 11 (Veteran’s Day), from 10 a.m. to noon each day. As part of this special opportunity, visitors will have the chance to get an up-close viewing of exciting repair work currently underway on Sierra No. 28, a historic “workhorse” steam locomotive. ...

Encouraged to ask questions, interested Park visitors can peek in the Roundhouse to watch the work being done during the Shop Tours. The historic Sierra No. 28 locomotive has been completely dis-assembled and the current work being done is welding in steel plates to replace corroded material. This marks a turning point in the project, as Railtown 1897 SHP staff will soon begin the re-assembly. When the plates have been completed, installation will begin with new tubes in the boiler. In addition to the Shop Tours, those interested can follow along on the repair progress on Railtown 1897 SHP’s blog at www.railtown1897.wordpress.com. Once repairs are completed, Sierra No. 28 is expected to return to service at the Park in 2015.

Widely known as “The Movie Railroad” due to the hundreds of films and movies that have been filmed on-location at the historic site, Railtown 1897 SHP is home to the historic Jamestown Shops and Roundhouse of the Sierra Railway. This one-of-a-kind attraction combines industrial heritage and railroad history with the lore of Hollywood's film industry. The Railtown 1897 Interpretive Center, the authentic Roundhouse and Shops, and the Depot Store (a railroad specialty gift shop) are among the Park's unique year-round offerings.

The cost for the unique Shop Tours experience is included with Park admission. Railtown 1897 SHP admission costs are as follows: $5 for adults, $3 for youths ages 6-17 and free for children five and under. More information about the Shop Tours, Sierra No. 28 or Railtown 1897 SHP is available by calling 209-984-3953 or visiting www.railtown1897.org.
