The Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports is Out Now

Angels Camp, Ca...The water is getting warmer and the fish are done spawning. The water clarity is a bit stained so brighter colored baits have been working best. The bass are feeding in the mornings and evenings on top water and other reaction type baits. We have also been catching a handful of fish on a variety of soft plastics and 3/8-1/2oz. football head jigs with matching Yamamoto trailers. Most of our fish have been in the 2-pound range with an occasional 3 to 4-pound fish... - New Melones Lake is currently holding 798,080 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped three feet this week and is currently at 912 ft. above sea level and 173 ft. from full. The water is stained in most areas of the lake, and fairly clear in others. There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day, especially on windy days. The average water temperature is 70-75 degrees and rising daily. The boat launch ramps on the Glory Hole side have been moved back out to the end of the point....

Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week goes to Troy Vargas of Valley Spring. He caught a beautiful rainbow while trolling a fire tiger Rapala at the south end of the lake.

We are also going to grant Big Fish of the Week honors to David Hylton (Murphy's) and Brian Basacker (Sonora). They had a very impressive stringer of fish in the 2 to 3-pound range none of which were individually weighed. They reported catching them at night under a submersible light.

Bank fishing for trout has been very slow. Trout season is open for rivers, and streams, it might be best to try your luck in these areas. If you do choose to target trout from the bank try using chartreuse or rainbow garlic Power Bait. Fly fishing anglers try fishing nymphs under an indicator during the day and switching to mayfly patterns during the evening. Also, try using buggers and streamers in the high country lakes. We do encourage catch and release for the brown trout as The Department of Fish and Game will no longer be planting them. Carefully measure, weigh and photograph trophy fish and send us pictures and information.

Kokanee: Good. Each week we are seeing and hearing of some nice kokanee being caught. The average size is 11-13" with a few fish measuring 14-16". The fish are schooling in deep water off of Glory Hole Point and near the dam, spillway and Rose Island. A variety of colors are producing limits. Pink is always a good choice with orange and chartreuse bringing in limits as well. The water has a green tint so it is best to use dodgers that have a high reflective quality. Gold and copper are good choice when trolling in stained water. Fish will be keying on baits that disperse water and create vibration. Try using spinners, Apex and bladed hoochies. It is also a good idea to modify your dodgers by adding a little bend to them. This modification will give the blade and bait more side-to side swing. Scent is very important when fishing in water with less visibility. Garlic, bloody tuna, anise, and kokanee special will work. Don't forget to tip your presentations with dyed and scent shoepeg corn.

Richard Kowski and Dynette Light caught a bunch of nice kokanee and a couple rainbows while trolling in 45' of water near the dam.

Bass: Fair. The spawn is over and the fish are pulled back off the banks and are in the process of recuperation. They are feeding in the mornings and evening on reaction type baits and top water baits. Smaller popper type baits have been working well. Try using Pop-R's, Live Target, and Gunfish to coax surface strikes. During the day the fish will move out toward deeper water. At this time of the year the bass are still in a protective/defensive mode. Try using large soft plastic baits that have many appendages to aggravate the fish. Brush Hogs and lizards are both good baits and can be fished on many different presentations. There are some bass that are targeting schools of shad. These fish are bit harder to locate and catch. Once you locate these shad eaters try using hard and soft plastic jerk baits to catch them. A shad patterned worm fished on a drop shot rig will also catch these fish well. Please practice catch and release. Take photos and carefully release the fish back into to the lake to maintain a healthy fish population for generations to come.

Catfish: Very Good. The big cats are up in shallow water and feeding heavily. The water temperature is getting warmer each day which has encouraged the cats to move shallow. Try using frozen shad or a ball of crawlers to target these fish. Catfish are drawn to bait by scent so it is a good idea to add additional scent to your bait.

Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week goes to Sean Tisdale of Sonora. He landed two chunky cats the biggest one weighed 15-pounds, 10-ounce.

Crappie: Slow. The crappie have been hard to find, try your luck at night fishing under a submersible light.

Guide Report from Guide John Liechty

The water is getting warmer and the fish are done spawning. The water clarity is a bit stained so brighter colored baits have been working best. On May 27th I took out father and son Dan and Brian Cahill for an evening of fishing and to celebrate Dan's Birthday. The wind that day was a bit gusty. We used it to our advantage, worked around it and caught some nice fish. Dan caught a couple largemouth on a shakey head and Brian landed a couple spotted bass that were close to 3-pounds on a C.R.L. jig. The surface bite didn't work out that night but we all enjoyed the Xperience of being on the water as the sun set.

Houseboat Owners Assoc. Update #2

fellow boaters,

The BOR reports that this was the biggest week ever for use of New Melones Lake. What a great asset our lake is to the community and businesses! Your leadership team is busy. Next week we meet with the Marina Owners to discuss ongoing drought related issues. Our next steps are to coordinate a volunteer Marina Clean Up Day and set our next meeting dates. Meanwhile, here is an update from our meeting the BOR:

Meeting Notes: BOR 5/14/14

Attendees: Steven Foster, Glynn Morris, Bill Carey, Alex Michalek

Lake levels were discussed. Within a 90% accuracy rating-at the end of....:

May-909 ft.

June-891 ft.

July-870 ft.

August-840 ft.

Sept.-826 ft.

The last BOR built ramp at Glory Hole comes out of the water at 899 ft. Then the first volunteer ramp attached to the Glory Hole Ramp comes out of the water at 846 ft. Then the second volunteer ramp comes out of the water at about 804 ft.

The BOR is working hard on trying to keep the Marina and Boaters on the water. The BOR will allow the two volunteer ramps and possibly the Old Hwy 49 road to be used as "emergency" houseboat pull-out facilities. Therefore, if you want to pull a houseboat out for storage or repairs other than an emergency, it needs to be done very soon!

Emergency pull outs will be reviewed by the BOR on a case by case basis and need careful planning due to narrow ramps and dock removal. The base line review for pull out need will be based on whether or not the boat represents a health and/or safety concern.

Marina Operator -we held a lengthy discussion on long term construction and management of a new marina to possibly be built within 3 to 5 years. The BOR will begin marketing that concept very soon to possible operators. Meanwhile, in the short term, the existing Marina Operator wants to retire. Therefore, the BOR and Marina Operator are in ongoing discussions/negotiations with an individual who wants to run the marina on a temporary basis for two years or so. This is good news because without a Marina we cannot have our boats on the lake. If all goes well, this transition will take place in Sept. We must all continue to support our marina as much as possible to keep it viable.

Storage and Pull Outs -the BOR is working on a houseboat storage plan just in case we all do have to pull out. Storing boats on Federal Land requires management by the Marina Operator as the Federal Govt. does not run concessions. We discussed the logistics of a mass pull out operation and the possibility of difficulty in securing boat movers during the drought. Details of the discussion included support stands, repair work, security, etc. We decided to hold these discussions in more detail at a later date. The BOR has agreed that if a pull out is necessary, those in good standing (i.e. fees paid up to date with Marina, have proper insurance, and in compliance with BOR standards) will be allowed to return to the Lake on a priority basis.

Marina Operator Contract -The BOR has agreed to e-mail us a copy of the Marina Contract. In addition, the BOR is working on the logistics and environmental documents to allow the Marina to continue moving out further into the Lake. There are boundary issues that have to be overcome so this is good news.

Roadwork -any grading or gravel that needs repairs (including the possibility of straightening a curve) between the volunteer ramps will be taken care of the BOR. The extent of any work won't be known until the roads and ramps surface.

Communication -in order to ensure proper communication, notes of meetings with the BOR will be reviewed and agreed to by the BOR and the leadership team before they go out for distribution. In addition, we will try and meet at least every 30 days to stay on top of this drought management situation.

End of notes

Keep spreading the word about our association. We have 57 contacts now and growing. I will update you after the meeting with the Marina Owners. Contact me at any time.

See you on the lake!
