Letter to the Editor ~ By Dale Paar

Murphys, CA... My daughter told me the best sound bite she's ever seen from a food critic was “music in your mouth”. Well, in that case I experienced a symphony in my mouth at Lorrucio's Sicilian Cuisine in Murphys, CA, last night. I am no food critic but I feel compelled to tell everyone what I found that delighted me so much (and I'm not that easily delighted!)....

My youngest son is heading for the Navy soon and I thought it would be great to have a “guys night out,” eat some good food and have a good conversation. We chose Lorrucio's Sicilian Cuisine because it's not far from the house and we were both up for something different from the usual fare we find in Murphys or Angels Camp.

We were both blown away by many aspects of this dining experience. I did not expect the fine dining experience we were treated to – and at prices that were more than comfortably affordable.

We both ordered bacon wrapped sirloin, medium rare, topped with sauteed mushrooms, accompanied by sauteed prawns with spaghetti as well. For appetizers we chose Italian sausage in a reduced red wine sauce, clams in a clear butter reduction and fried calamari with a seasoned mayonnaise dip. Of course the table had been immediately laden with sliced, warm Italian bread accompanied by an oil and vinegar dip as we sat down.

I could not believe how well the flavors I was treated to complimented each other. The sirloin was excellently prepared exactly as ordered and remained so deliciously tender to the last bite and the bacon was a wonderful taste addition; the sauteed prawns (which happen to be a favorite of mine) and the sauteed mushrooms all convinced me I was indeed in heaven. The spaghetti was a great addition and was our choice as opposed to the spaghetti squash also offered.

Ordered with our meal was a takeout request “for my wife who works nights – something not too extravagant, she enjoys a good pasta – please make her something she might enjoy, thank you.”

Monica was our hostess/waitress and her service of this dinner was nothing but exceptional. Our drinks were refilled attentively and our food was prepared in a timely and splendidly plated fashion. No complaints in this area whatsoever. As we were finished and presented the bill Monica placed my takeout request on the table – penne pasta in a creamy white sauce with flavorful mushrooms, succulent tomatoes, and tender chicken bites. I knew my wife would be thrilled and later she was!

I think what added to this delightful culinary experience has to be the calm and comfortable atmosphere of the dining area. It seems like private dining when in fact it's not. The ambiance is wonderfully local, relaxing and completely pleasant and we could have been seated outdoors if we had desired.

My family will be back again and again because of the obviously fresh and passionately prepared ingredients. Lorenzo has help in the kitchen, so I don't have any idea who prepared what. I do know this man who calls himself “just a cook” is a very accomplished Chef in my eyes and I wish him all the luck in the world with this new adventure called Lorrucio's Sicilian Cuisine because I intend to frequent this establishment for a very long time.

Sincerely,
Just another thepinetree.net reader
