A Masterful Production of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde ~By, Charity Maness

Murphys Creek Theater once again proves they can and will tackle any production no matter the difficulty with great creativity, talent, and ingenuity. Director Bruce Cole’s directorial debut of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was an undertaking of masterful theatrical work. Dealing with split personalities within the same scene, the depravity of man’s darker side, and the love of a beautiful woman kept the audience holding their breath.

The scene opens with an ominous feeling quickly followed by a shrilling scream and the discovery of a corpse found to be none other than….

Quickly the scene becomes narrated by each actor as they play their multiple parts to perfection. There is not a moment where one can sit back in their seat and quietly comment to the person seated next to them; this is by all means a ‘thinking man’s play.’ Following the twisting and turning of the story as the plot thickens and the details of the crimes emerge leaves the viewer feeling as if he/she were actually there and following the investigation. Caught up in the crime and the multiple directions of the investigation causes time to fly by.

As scenes change and narration connects one scene to the next an eclectic and colorful collection of background music is played, seemingly to create a bit more confusion in the viewers brain, wondering all the while at the connection between the music and the scene. Some connections were clear, others were so vague yet became clear as the scene became alive …or more sinister.

Though all parts were performed with such amazing skill it must be mentioned that the evil side of Dr. Jekyll, that of Mr. Hyde played by Tyler Mattson, was performed so well one almost loved to hate him yet at the same time could see in him what man could become if left without restraints of any kind. The expressions on his face of pure hatred and calculating evil were spot on.

The program includes a short synopsis of the novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson, while this is helpful for those not familiar with the story, a little research prior to attending may provide a bit more insight and therefore a more enjoyable theater experience.

Playing through October 31, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For more information on times and tickets please visit www.murphyscreektheatre.org or call 728-8422
