One on One with Bret Harte Alum and UCLA Offensive Tackle Brett Downey ~with Video By John Hamilton

Angels Camp, CA...At 6" & 265lbs of adipose tissue I don't normally feel like a midget but I did on Friday morning at Bret Harte's Dorroh Field. We had the pleasure to chat with UCLA's Offensive Tackle Brett Downey. At 6'7" and 310lbs Brett hopes to become an integral part of the UCLA offensive line this year. Bret is up 60lbs from his playing weight at Bret Harte with earning a starting spot at UCLA and then the Pros as a goal he hopes to build up to 325-330lbs. If you have seen the move "The Blind Side" then you know what position he plays...

Our Video Interview with Brett is Enclosed...

his job is to protect the quarterback and protect the quarterback's "Blind Side".

He was a walk-on three years ago and now he has earned a scholarship at one of the perennial football powerhouses in the nation. He was blessed with good football genetics but he has worked like mad to build himself into the player he is today.

He red-shirted his freshman year and saw his first playing time last year. This year he hopes to earn consistent playing time and the battle for a coveted starting spot starts in earnest when training camp opens up next week.

Big college football is basically a year round job. Between classes, practice and training he has but a few precious weeks off a year.

His parents Rick & Kelly Downey and all of his former coaches are very proud and hope to be watching Brett in the pros in a few years. Good luck Brett and we hope to see you playing in the Rose Bowl in January...
