The Kid Connection..."Extending learning throughout the summer: Keep your children reading!"~by Stefanie Pechan

In between trips to the community pool or vacationing, you might consider swinging by your local library or book store with your family. Why? Reading over the summer keeps those brains working! A slew of skills are sharpened and honed for the next school year; fluency, decoding, reading comprehension, vocabulary, the list goes on and on. Another tidbit of research (parents magazine): “A study led at Nevada University concluded that children who come from homes well-stocked with books are likely to stay in school three years longer than those who don’t. The Telegraph says, on the study: ‘Regular access to books has a direct impact on pupils’ results, irrespective of parents’ own education, occupation, and social class, it was claimed.’ Even having 20 books in your home can make a difference.”...

A few ways to get your children reading: Summer reading programs at your local library! Arnold library has a summer reading program for BOTH children and adults. For every 5 books you read, you earn a prize. You’ll also be entered into a drawing for a larger prize like ice cream or pizza! For older children (and adults), for every book you read that is over 200 pages, you earn a stamp that equals 2 books. The more you read the more prizes you can win! Sounds like a great deal to me.

Several book stores also have summer reading programs and some pretty great deals on books. Borders book stores have a “Double Dog Dare” reading program. For children 12 and under: for every 10 books they read, they earn a FREE book (from Borders list).

So have fun this summer and keep the pages flying!
