Getting Rid of Your Old Computer~by Mark Kirkendall of Calaveras IT
So you just pulled your shiny new computer out of the box, set it up, copied data from your old computer and can't believe how fast the new one is. So now comes the question, what are you going to do with your old computer? Maybe you can give it away or donate it. Maybe it was so messed up you're just going to throw it away. ...
Wait a Minute! Is that the same computer that stored your financial records and personal files? Even though you may have deleted them, that is not enough. Believe it or not, simply formatting or reinstalling windows isn't enough either. After files have been deleted or the hard drive formatted, the files are still recoverable using special software that can easily be found on the web. The computer should be "Wiped" prior to heading out to its new home- wherever that may be.
There are a number of utilities on the market that can wipe your old data. A popular Free utility is called ERASER and can be found by doing a quick web search.
After wiping your computer, you will need to decide how to dispose of it. If you are giving it away, the problem is solved. Many large PC Manufacturers are now offering to take your old computer off your hands when you purchase the new one. Computer components are considered toxic and cannot be thrown away with your regular trash. According to the Calaveras County Solid Waste web site, County residents can take their old computer to the Red Hill, Wilseyville or Avery transfer stations at no additional charge. They have a separate collection point at these station for consumer electronics.
Now all you have to do is sit back and enjoy that new speed machine!
