"Weekend Warrior Report"~by Andrea Silva

Whether you are madly in love or shouting out a big old “Bahumbug” to Valentine’s Day, the Weekend Warrior Report has something for you. There are so many different events going on this weekend! Whether you are up for romance or adventure there is something here to fit your mood and budget....

For the Love Birds on a Budget – Now not all of us are flush enough to profess our love with a 2 carat diamond so here are just a few ideas to kick off a romantic evening….the rest of the night is up to you. Slumdog Millionaire is playing at Angels Theater on Saturday at 12:50, 3:40, or 6:30 this is an inspiring underdog story with a warm and fuzzy love story mixed in, it will warm the cockles of your heart, and only set you back $18. For other movies and times call 736-6768. This next one will take a bit of leg work but should be well worth it. Grab your gloves, camera, and a sled, then head on over to Angels Market to grab some tasty picnic sandwiches, or better yet how about sushi, then take a short drive up to a snowy hillside and have some fun frolicking in our winter wonderland. Set out a picnic lunch and huddle up for a break between sled runs.

For the Adventurous Couple – I know that everyone’s minds probably went in the gutter for just a moment there but, come on back. I am talking about the type of adventure that doesn’t require pulling the shades and turning up the stereo so the neighbors won’t hear. However, this will require you strapping yourself to your partner……stay with me now……..being attached to a cable and then taking an exhilarating ride through a ravine on the California Caverns tandem zip line. This super charged bout of fun will run you about $39. If you are trying to keep costs down, for around $15 try one of the Cavern or Gold mining tours. It stays a bit chilly down there so feel free to huddle up and stay close. Click this link to get a coupon http://www.caverntours.com/cavecoupon.htm with the money you save you can buy some jewelry……….from a vending machine.

Potentially Steamy – Get in the mood for love with some romantic poetry reading at the Ledger Hotel as The Calaveras Arts Council hosts “Between the Sheets,” a Writing Workshop, Luncheon, and Public Reading. The cost is $50, register at 8:30 am and then stay all day for lunch, readings and teachings. Learn some poetry skills that are sure to get your loved one “In the mood”. Traditional Valentines – Dinners, Brunches, and Lunches oh my! There are so many to choose from, it boggles the mind, so here are just a few of my personal favorite romantic joints……

Try something fresh, like Panini’s in Copperopolis. This is the new Italian Restaurant smack dab in the middle of the swanky new Copperopolis Towne Square. They have a special Valentine’s menu planned that is sure to wet your appetite and leave you satisfied. You will most likely need reservations so call 785-8811. After dinner, take a stroll through the Towne Center, there are several quaint shops including Firefall Jewelers, Eve, Copper Proper, and Fancy Pans, just to name a few.

Greenhorn Creek is always a safe bet for cutting a rug and getting some tasty bits. They have a special Valentines menu complete with Lobster, Scallops, Cheesecake and Chocolate mmm good! You will probably want to make a reservation by calling 736-8181 $55 per person.

The Creekside Dining Room at Bear Valley Lodge is also offering a Special Valentines Day Menu which includes romantic a meal for two for $100 prepared by Executive Chef Robby Christie. Reservations Recommended - 209.753.2327, ext. 0. Dinner Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 5:00 - 9:00 pm.

Ironstone Vineyards also has VALENTINE SWEETHEARTS' DINNER & DANCE. Celebrate an elegant night out with your Valentine with wine, dinner and dancing. Featuring the live music of: John Covert - Crystal Image. Ironstone's annual Valentines Dinner begins at 6:30 pm hors d'oeuvres and champagne, 7:00 pm dinner and the dancing begins at 8:45. Cost is $75 per person. Call to make your reservation: 209-728-1251. The Menu will include: 1st Course, Organic greens with roasted garlic vinaigrette, 2nd Course, Proscuitto Wrapped Pork Tenderloin, mashed sweet potatoes and cream spinach, Dessert will be Chef's choice.

Bahumbug! - Even if you are not in the mood for love, there is some fun to be had this weekend. Friday night the band Plan B will be playing at our favorite hole-in-the-wall Murphys Hotel. If you are single and not looking for love the “Plan” here would be to party it up, drown your sorrows, then sleep the day away on Saturday to avoid any unwanted mushy moment sightings.

If you happen to be single and on the prowl, White Pines Bar has that wild and kooky band Krazy Ivan this Saturday night starting at 9pm. You can look for love in sea of singles or just rock out and dance to the cool tunes. They poor a pretty stiff drink up there (presumably to ward off any impending frost bite) so make sure you have a designated driver.
